I may seem overly cautious, but I’m using this setup with a Verizon Orbic ‘hotspot.’ Fortunately, I discovered all the functionalities I was looking for in the firewall and DHCP server. However, I was disheartened to realize that there were no LED indicators to show activity on the WAN/LAN ports. What seemed to be LED indicators turned out to be mere black plastic components. Installing this was ultimately futile since my intention was solely to monitor the Ethernet ports (I don’t use the WiFi).

I wanted an OpenWRT (LuCi) router as an upgrade to my Motorola Smart AC1900 because I need to configure a more sophisticated Guest LAN. I started with the lower-end GL.iNet routers. At 50ft radius, this router is over 15% slower than the Motorola Smart AC1900 and can only connect with the Azulle Quantum PC-Stick (HDMI Win10 attached to TV) with 2.5Mb download data rate and yet it supported 6Mb upload (my maximum cable upload speed). Upgrading to the latest GL.iNet firmware did not fix the PC-Stick connection problem.

As a frequent traveler who relies on Airbnb accommodations, I often find myself needing to update passwords on three different devices. Interestingly, some Airbnb locations don’t even require a password for their Wi-Fi access. To streamline this process and enhance security, I utilize this device as a repeater, linking it to the host’s router using their provided password. Thanks to this setup, my three devices now seamlessly connect to the internet, all while adding an additional layer of security to my connection. I wholeheartedly recommend this approach to fellow travelers seeking a hassle-free and secure internet experience on the go.

I’m such a fan of this device that I ended up purchasing a second one. I’ve set up the first one at home, positioned behind my primary router, where it serves as a WireGuard VPN server and runs AdGuard Home DNS. This configuration allows me to block ads across all the devices connected to my home network. As for the second unit, I use it as a travel router equipped with a WireGuard VPN client, making it incredibly convenient for hotel stays. Additionally, I’ve repurposed it to function as a small file server for storing media.
To ensure the WireGuard VPN functions properly, I had to reserve DHCP and configure port forwarding on my primary home router. Similarly, I set up port forwarding on the Slate Plus at home, redirecting all DNS requests on my network from Port 53 to Port 3053 to route them through AdGuard Home (simply setting the primary DNS on my main router to this router’s IP or AdGuard’s IP didn’t work). Although there’s a feature called “Gateway drop-in mode” designed to minimize network adjustments, I encountered issues with it. My SmartThings hub would intermittently go offline and online, and my son’s PC games experienced performance problems with this mode enabled. I chose not to exclude those devices and instead opted for manual network adjustments.

Gl.Inet produces some of the finest travel routers, and this particular model is no exception. It boasts a compact and lightweight design, complete with a Type-C power port that conveniently accommodates most phone chargers. Operating on their latest 4.2.x software, which is based on OpenWRT 21.x, it offers support for a wide array of popular VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, Wireguard, ZeroTier, and Tailscale. Personally, I run both Wireguard (for internet traffic) and ZeroTier (for accessing my home NAS) simultaneously, and the device handles this seamlessly. For those who require advanced customizations, you can access the original OpenWRT interface (LuCI) or SSH into the router, though I haven’t found the need to do so thus far.
